I LOVED this book...the first one by Bradley that I read & the one that got me hooked! This book tells the story of life at Thomas Jefferson's estate Monticello through the eyes of children he fathered with one of his slaves Sally Hemings. These enslaved children led much more difficult lives than Jefferson's other children who happily enjoyed their freedom. Considering Thomas Jefferson was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence, this story was quite ironic as he readily promoted freedom but did not practice these ideals at home.
My favorite author of the moment is Kimberly Brubaker Bradley who is actually from Bristol, TN...AND I got to meet her at the TASL conference in Oct. What an amazing author! I've now read 4 of her books. |
